You are about to visit a special place, South Andros Island in the Bahamas.
When you return home, please tell as few people as possible about your stay on this lovely island as we wish it not to change one bit. The easiest way to get to our island is from Nassau.
Several discount carriers (JetBlue, etc) now fly to Nassau and airfares have decreased substantially this year. You will need either a passport or a birth certificate to enter the Bahamas.
Western Air, 242-377-2222, has two flights each day from Nassau to the South Andros Airport at Congotown..
. 7:00 a.
m. and 3:00 p.
m. and these times change slightly during the seasons.
Western accepts only cash and advance reservations are strongly suggested. Its a 15 minute flight in a very comfortable, 19 passenger turbo-prop.
If youre interested in chartering a private aircraft from Ft. Lauderdale, we can suggest several for you depending upon the size of the aircraft youll need.
U.S.
dollars are accepted everywhere on the island and Bahamian currency will normally be given you as change. Its okay as both currencies are at par.
Do not bring any Bahamian currency back home with you as you may have problems getting it exchanged at your bank. Credit cards are rarely accepted on the island, as are personal checks, and there are no ATMs on the island.
It takes between 30 and 45 days for US checks, credit cards, and even travelers checks to clear before showing up in a Bahamian account. Most restaurants, convenience stores, etc, accept travelers checks but may charge you a small percentage to cover the delay in getting their money back.
Bring cash and travelers checks in $50 or less increments and youll be ok. You will be pleased to know that South Andros is a very affordable island as there is limited shopping, dinners begin in the $10 range, and prices at local convenience stores are very similar to those in the states.
Check out the small Straw Market 1/2 mile south on the right (behind the Tourism Information Office). VERY reasonable items are available and they make great souvenirs.
Upon landing, pass through the small terminal area and ask for a cab to take you to Jerry and Linda Bottchers beach house on the Congotown beach, two minutes away. The island has 12 settlements or settled areas, and Congotown (where the airport is) is one of them.
Exit the airport, cross the small road and enter a narrow, sand and gravel road that goes 200 yards to the beach. Turn right at the beach, and our house is the only one nearby, 1/8 mile down the sandy road.
If you select to rent a car for the time youre on the island, and we suggest you do for at least some of the time, the cars owner will meet you at the airport with the keys to your vehicle. The house has a telephone and the number is 242-369-2470.
Prior to leaving the states, please check your calling cards international (or Caribbean) number so you can use it to call home from the house. Wendy and Brian Dean, 369-1963, are the caretakers of the house.
One of them will drop by soon after you arrive to say hello. They are available to assist and advise you through your stay and Brian is quite handy with anything that may malfunction.
The house has a CD/stereo if you wish to bring some discs with you. Wendy is the pastor of the adjacent St.
Marys Baptist church and I suggest spending a period of time Wednesday evening, 6-7:30 or Sunday morning, 11-12:30, at one of her services. Quite enjoyable and a great memory! The house has two bicycles.
The sandy road in front of the house, the Bay Road, was the original road on the island. Extending one mile each to the north and south, it makes for a wonderful, morning ride.
Two, very stable, ocean kayaks are available to you as well. High and low tide alternate every 6 hours.
If low tide is 8 am, high tide will be 2 pm, and, each day, it progresses one hour. The next day, low tide will be at 9 am, etc.
The beach widens to 450 during low tide! During a calm day, and at low tide, kayak the one-mile to the reef in front of the house. Anchor the kayaks with the anchors at the house and snorkel over the reef.
Its shallow and pretty awesome. 150 yards north on the beach, and 150 yards out in the ocean, are two small and submerged islands that offer incredible snorkeling.
See if you can find them! Bring a bag of frozen peas or bread and feed the hundreds of fish youll see. The basement of the house contains a limited inventory of snorkels/masks but we suggest bringing your own.
Leave the two balcony doors open in the evening with the screens closed (unless the wind is too strong) as a cool breeze generally flows throughout the house. If the night is calm and warm, turn the circulating fans on in each bedroom as well as the overhead fans.
Generally, evenings are cool however and additional blankets are available to insure a wonderful nights sleep. Following a swim, rinse off under the outside shower under the stairwell.
A small bucket is at the foot of the steps and allows you to rinse the sand off your feet prior to entering the house. Place filled garbage bags in the large container in the basement of the house.
There is a small recycling company on the island and we ask our guests to separate bottles that are picked up weekly and shipped to Nassau. Here are some places where you should dine.
Phone numbers for them are next to entrance door: 1. Ezrenas- 4 miles north on the left just prior to the Driggs Hill dock.
2. Kemps Restaurant - 4 miles to the south on the right.
Great hosts. 3.
Elinors - 5 miles south adjacent to the road on the left. Outside dining.
4. Haylenes - 2 miles south on the right.
Quaint bar and dining room. Call well ahead of time, ask them whats on the menu and give them your selections.
If you can, order a combination of items, i.e.
, lobster/fish, chicken/ribs, fish/cracked conch (a must..
you gotta have cracked conch!) etc. By the way, its pronounced CONK, not CONCH! Also, request appetizers such as conch fritters, conch stew, grouper fingers (Bahamian staples).
You should also know that Wendy Dean is one of the finest cooks on the island and will prepare a most memorable dinner(s) for you at the beach house! Simply tell her which night and, weather permitting, put a table out on the porch, put a few candles on it, and enjoy a starlit dinner youll remember for a long time! A Weber gas grill is available for our guests use. Enjoy a chargrilled dinner with (pretty decent!) steaks you can purchase down the road at the M and M Convenience Store.
There is also an outdoor barbecue grill in front of the house. If you wish to use it, gather old coconut husks around the property (make sure theyre split.
..
theyre better than briquettes!), small branches and grape leaves, open the rear door to the grill to let the ocean breeze ignite the coals, and have a great cookout at home. There are several, small convenience stores about the island.
For the most complete one, drive 6 miles south to the Bluff and look for M and M convenience store on the right. The tall fellows name is Candyman, the owner is Genny, and both are terrific people.
Tell them we sent you. Get the Rum Raisin ice cream.
Awesome. Adjacent to the M and M is Neelys bakery.
You HAVE to get their Banana or Pumpkin Pudding. It's really not pudding but a local pastry that is great with breakfast and incredible with morning coffee.
Also get their Coconut Tarts. Awesome.
They also have excellent, $8 lunches to go that you can micro-wave later for dinner. Fresh vegetables are available 2 miles south on the left of the main road at Jeffreys fresh vegetable stand.
Great stuff, its fresh, and Jeffrey and his wife are wonderful people. Tell them Jerry and Linda said hello! Three miles south, on the right, is the local liquor and beer store.
Booze is extremely reasonable, unlike the beer, which is not! Open until 5 pm. The local beer, brewed in Nassau, is called KALIK.
You gotta try it. Its cool to have a Kalik in your hand and be seen in public.
Okay..
.heres something you REALLY have to do.
You HAVE to take the BLUE HOLE TOUR with Edmund Rahming. It should be a law.
He runs the local health food store (thats right) 3 miles north on the left. Its a 2-mile guided tour through the beautiful woods of South Andros Island.
Birds, fauna, trees, and 5 small, fresh water ponds so deep that they are reputed to connect to the sea. The tour includes (if you wish!) a visit to a BAT CAVE and ends with a delightful swim in a remote Blue Hole and its surrounding cave that youll remember forever.
Information on his tour is on the coffee table at the house. There is a nice clinic on the island.
Its 20 minutes to the south and the number should be included in the island numbers tacked to the wall adjacent to the entrance door. Theres also a telephone directory next to the phone.
Its a primary care facility, i.e.
, broken arms, the flu, cuts, etc. That reminds me, its VERY important that you drive on the LEFT side of the road with everyone else.
If you wish to hire a guide for a day or two for some world-class bonefishing, let me know and we can assist you. We know all the island guides and can refer several to you.
Plan on $325-$375 for a full day for two. There are areas nearby that accommodate wading for bonefish without a guide but its best that I verbally tell you where those spots are and when to fish them, as its somewhat complicated.
We generally suggest trying a guide for a day or two before venturing on your own as spotting these very elusive fish can be a bit tricky. Well.
..
thats it. Please call or e-mail with any additional questions.
Im quite confident that youre in for quite an adventure. Jerry and Linda Bottcher 800-766-9137 (U.
S. and Canada) 518-946-2217 (Elsewhere) Property Activities The island of South Andros is a land of peaceful innocence.
It is an undisturbed island in the Bahamas where a much slower pace of life and a laid back, all is well attitude is entrenched in the culture of the native people. Where wonderful, handsome children, dressed in multi-colored school uniforms await at roadside bus stops on sunny mornings, waving together as you pass by.
As the immediate waters surrounding South Andros are so shallow (1-4 at low tide), the ability to accommodate cruise ships has never existed. Consequently, the trappings of a Jamaica, Grand Cayman, or Cancun will never exist on this island.
There are no souvenir shops, no fast food restaurants, chain hotels, jet skis or para-sailing. What does exist is a population of the nicest, friendliest people on earth, the most wonderful climate youll find anywhere, the longest stretches of the most vacant beaches anywhere, and, unquestionably, the finest variety of fishing experiences in the world.
For those seeking a fast-paced, action oriented island, blitzed with shopping plazas and the sound of steel bands into the evening, you will be sadly disappointed and should not consider South Andros as a destination island. The owners of the Coconut Palms Beach House Club join the wonderful people of South Andros and invite you to journey to an experience.
An experience unconditioned by e-mails, cell phones, deadlines, or even a watch! Where crisp timing and efficiency is less consequential, and where gentle breezes, golden sunrises and friendly smiles will forever be carved in your memory
